Legacy Rooted in Vision

The year was 1980. Ronald Reagan had just been elected the 40th President of the United States, Pierre Trudeau became the 22nd Prime Minister of Canada, 3M released the first Post-It Notes, and a little yellow character named Pac-Man was captivating the world. Meanwhile, in Oshawa, Ontario, a group of Jamaican friends gathered around a kitchen table. Their conversation was not about politics or new inventions, it was about legacy. They spoke of the need to preserve the Jamaican culture and identity within their children, now growing up thousands of miles from home.

Out of that evening of reflection, laughter, and shared pride, the Canadian Jamaican Club of Oshawa (CJC) was born, a vision to nurture community, celebrate culture, and uplift future generations.

Formally registered as a non-profit, and volunteer-driven organization, the CJC took on a mission that would carry through the decades: to promote multiculturalism, enhance civic life, and strengthen the bonds of heritage and belonging across Durham Region.

HURRICANE MELISSA RELIEF EFFORT

Hurricane Melissa, a Category 5 hurricane, devastated Jamaica, leaving behind a severe humanitarian crisis. More than a dozen lives have been lost, thousands of families are displaced, and essential infrastructure—including schools, hospitals, and homes—has been destroyed, most beyond repair.
